Time for a REAL Reformation!

On June 7, 1494 and later on April 29, 1529 Portugal and Spain divided up the world between them in declaring their sovereignty as the Holy Roman Empire. Meanwhile, other European powers were declaring their own sovereignties under what was called the Protestant Reformation. But the concept of Sovereignty has taken on new significance lately and there is major competition for which national sovereignty will hold global dominance. What it says to us is that the Protestant Reformation now celebrating its 500th Year hardly produced substantive change to pursuits of global domination so the moment has brought us to our theme for the day of Time for a REAL Reformation.

Summary:

This sermon advocates for a modern spiritual reformation by re-examining the historical and theological distortions of early Christian texts. The speaker argues that the Reformation often misinterpreted the writings of Paul, shifting the focus from communal equality and social justice toward individual justification. By looking at Paul through the lens of Jesus’s actual teachings, the speaker emphasizes a commitment to mercy and compassion rather than religious nationalism or rigid dogma. The sermon also critiques Martin Luther’s legacy, contrasting his confrontation of church corruption with his later problematic views on the Jewish community. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a liberating faith that actively rejects systemic racism, militarism, and economic inequality to foster an egalitarian society.
