No Time to Go it Alone

What does it mean to be a people of Expectation? For Unitarian Universalists, change is expected; is it easier in community?

Summary:

This sermon explores the essential nature of human interdependence and the psychological or theological reasons why people struggle to act in isolation. Through a personal narrative about a protest at the Supreme Court, the speaker illustrates how collective action provides a sense of safety and purpose that individual effort cannot achieve. This theme is further reinforced by the story of a business owner who uses broad social networks, or “weak ties,” to manage a mental health condition, highlighting that survival often depends on being known by others. The speaker argues that while society often prizes independence, true resilience and justice are born from being part of a communal web. Ultimately, the sermon serves as a call to foster connections—both deep and casual—to combat the fear and loneliness of modern life. It concludes that in a world of political and personal turmoil, there is no time to go it alone.
