Become a Member

Newcomers who enjoy worshiping and connecting with the UUCL community are encouraged to explore the path to membership. A member needn’t cancel nor officially disavow membership in another faith to become a member of UUCL.

If your values align with the Unitarian Universalist shared values and you are in sympathy with the purpose of UUCL, you are invited to become a member when you:

New member orientation/The Path to Membership sessions are offered twice yearly, with upcoming dates published in the weekly email.

Accepting our mission and covenants is a verbal commitment that confirms your understanding of the values of UUCL. Our mission statement is “Kindling the flame of love and justice to nurture and heal ourselves, each other and the world.” Our covenants include the Covenant of Loving Relations and our weekly affirmation: Love is the spirit

A pledge of record is an investment in one’s spirit and values. Following through with your pledge enables you to accomplish what you may not be able to do alone. Together, we can effect change for ourselves, our neighbors, our world.

Signing The Book of Members is witnessed by the minister and member of the governing board. The congregation recognizes new members with words of hope and welcome during the worship service. A celebration follows!

New members receive:

  • the right to vote (30 days after becoming a member),
  • access to our website members area
  • an invitation to the UUCL Fellowship group on Facebook;
  • a subscription to UU World (the UUA magazine)
  • and the love, respect and commitment of the community!

Members are the foundation of our democratic community. They are collectively vested with responsibility for this congregation. Besides voting privileges, members can serve in leadership positions and help guide the mission of the church.

Responsibilities to the congregation because we are in covenant with one another.

  • Regular attendance at worship: Weekly worship cements the bonds of community and keeps us focused on our highest values of love, justice and freedom, while nurturing our spirits.
  • Voting at congregational meetings: Members are called upon to actively participate in meetings by imagining the needs of the entire congregation and considering how issues affect all members of the congregation, potential members and people outside the congregation.
  • Contributing time, talent and treasure: The congregation of UUCL works because the members give of themselves through music, standing committees, religious exploration, technology, social and earth justice activities, organizing, cooking, greeting, caring for the buildings and grounds, and in many other ways. Financial support also serves as a spiritual discipline. Aiming for a modern tithe is a goal: a percentage of income to the congregation, and to organizations, causes and church initiatives that support UU values. It is Unitarian Universalism in action – finding ways to give that nurture the spirit of the community and the individual, to serve our mission of kindling the flame of love and justice.
