Music in My Life

For nearly his entire life Allan has been playing music. Today, Allan performs with the Loudoun Jazz Ensemble, the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, and various jazz groups. As a follow up to Saturday’s concert, Allan will be discussing aspects of jazz and will be playing his basses. Audience participation will be encouraged.

Summary:

In this personal reflection, a musician explores the technical and emotional complexities of jazz performance while recounting his lifelong journey with the bass. He explains the subtle non-verbal communication and structured improvisation required during a live show, detailing concepts like “trading fours” and the importance of clapping on the correct beats. Beyond the technicalities of chord changes and rhythm, the speaker candidly discusses his struggle with imposter syndrome despite a highly successful background in elite orchestras. Ultimately, he describes music as a unifying, transcendent force that connects people across all boundaries through the mathematical beauty of sound. He concludes that the power of music lies in its ability to evoke profound emotional responses that are deeply rooted in the spirit of love.
