Prayer Is…

Inspired by the musical “Come From Away.”  This summer’s theme – Broadway & Beyond: A Musical Journey of the Spirit!

Summary:

This sermon explores the concept of radical hospitality through the lens of the Broadway musical Come From Away, which depicts the true story of how Gander, Newfoundland, cared for thousands of stranded passengers after the 9/11 attacks. The speaker highlights how the townspeople went beyond meeting basic needs to offer genuine human connection, treating service to others as a form of “prayer.” By incorporating diverse perspectives from a local congregation, the sermon illustrates that prayer can be defined broadly as an expression of hope, gratitude, or a commitment to interconnectedness. Ultimately, the sermon emphasizes that by embracing creative interchange and welcoming those different from ourselves, we can create a ripple effect of peace and kindness. This reflection encourages building communities where every individual is truly seen and looked after with compassion.
