The Role of the Artist

Artist and activist Toni Cade Bambaras said the “role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible.” What might beauty and justice work have to offer each other? Explore nurturing beauty as a way to sustain and inspire social justice work, with guest speaker, Lora Powell-Haney, M.Div. There will be an opportunity (and a bit of guidance for those who need some inspiration to get started!) to create art during the service, both in-person and online.

Summary:

This sermon highlights the essential connection between artistic expression and social activism, specifically through the lens of Unitarian Universalist values and reproductive justice. Drawing inspiration from Toni Cade Bambara, the speaker argues that creators have a unique power to make the pursuit of equity and bodily autonomy feel both beautiful and unavoidable. The sermon emphasizes that the long-standing struggle for healthcare access is a moral imperative that requires diverse forms of creativity to galvanize a movement. By engaging in artistic production, individuals can resist institutional restrictions and envision a world where every person’s dignity is protected. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a communal revolution driven by visionaries who use their talents to foster compassion and cultural change.
