TrUUmpism

Yes, that’s a controversial sermon title, but, no, this will not be a political sermon. It will be, Mel hopes, a fresh way of looking at the divisions in the country and what those divisions may teach us as Americans and as Unitarian Universalists.

Summary:

This sermon explores the complex relationship between TrumpismAmerican history, and the values of Unitarian Universalism. The speaker argues that the nation is deeply divided between a propositional identity based on equality and a settler identity focused on assimilation. By examining the concept of aspirational hypocrisy, the sermon suggests that Americans often ignore the brutal realities of their past to maintain a virtuous self-image. The speaker cautions against retreating into ideological bubbles, urging his congregation to practice compassionate listening and radical acceptance toward those with differing political views. Ultimately, the sermon advocates for a truth and reconciliation process to bridge cultural divides and preserve the church as a inclusive space for all.
