Whence We Come and How and Whither

With a new mission statement, a needed response to pandemic living, and recognizing that we are not the building, what are the dreams that are ours to do in these days and times?

Summary:

In this sermon, Reverend Alice King addresses the current challenges and future aspirations of her Unitarian Universalist congregation. She acknowledges widespread social concerns and the grief caused by the ongoing pandemic while emphasizing the power of resilience and joy. The sermon explores the tension between tradition and progress, specifically analyzing the history of the hymn “Rank by Rank” to reflect on the church’s heritage. King outlines three primary governing board goals, which include navigating COVID-19 safety, finding a more accommodating physical space, and defining what it means to live out their mission of love and justice. Ultimately, she encourages the community to move beyond the limitations of their building to create a new world together.
