Can We Start Again, Please?

What has gone wrong with the Christ story for lots UUs, and how is it serving so many? Jesus Christ Superstar has lessons to teach, including our own UU theology: “We have the capacity to save ourselves.” Inspired by the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.” This summer’s theme – Broadway & Beyond: A Musical Journey of the Spirit!

Summary:

In this sermon, Jennifer Springsteen describes how the musical Jesus Christ Superstar transformed her perspective on faith and the historical figure of Jesus. She blends pop culture with process theology, arguing that Jesus acted as a catalyst for a creative power that lives on through his followers rather than as a supernatural deity. Springsteen emphasizes that the “Jesus story” belongs to justice seekers and revolutionaries who must remain “woke” and active in the face of modern political and environmental crises. Central to her message is a liberal interpretation of salvation, which suggests that humans save one another through compassion and communal action rather than divine intervention. Ultimately, she calls for a righteous engagement with the world, urging her audience to reclaim sacred narratives to fuel contemporary movements for social change.
